Cardiff University is a research university locat-ed in Cardiff， Wales， United Kingdom. The university is composed of three colleges： Arts， Humanities and Social Sciences； Biomedical and Life Sciences； and Physical Sci-ences. Founded in 1883 as the University College of South Wales and Monmouthshire， it is the second oldest university in Wales. In 1972， the college lost the name it had retained for ninety years and was renamed University College， Cardiff. In 1988， financial considerations led to the merger of University College， Cardiff with the University of Wales Institute of Science and Technology， UWIST， forming the University of Wales College， Cardiff. The Principal of the new institution was Sir Aubrey Trotman-Dickenson， who had been principal of UWIST. Following changes to the constitu-tion of the University of Wales in 1996， this became the University of Wales， Cardiff. In 1997， the college was granted full independent degree awarding-powers by the Privy Council (though， as a member of the Uni-versity of Wales it could not begin using them) and in 1999 the public name of the university was changed to Cardiff University. Cardiff Uni-versity became its formal title in 2004， the same year it merged with the University of Wales College of Medicine.The university has two main sites. The Cathays Park campus in Cardiff city centre is the largest site， and the second， Heath Park campus， is next to the University Hospital of Wales and concentrates on health care related subjects. The University is a member of the Russell Group of leading British research universities. Its breadth of expertise in research and research-led teaching encompass-es： the humanities； the natural， physical， health， life and social sciences； engineering and technology； preparation for a wide range of professions； and a longstanding commitment to lifelong learning.

Cardiff is a significant tourist centre and the most popular visitor destination in Wales. Current developments include the continuation of the redevelopment of the Cardiff Bay and city centre areas with projects such as the Cardiff International Sports Village， a BBC drama village， and a new business district in the city centre. Cardiff is the largest media centre in the UK outside of London.
